Student guide · For familiesParents guide.
Thank you for trusting us with teaching your child. Here is how things work around the dojo.
- What L1, L2 and L3 meanL1: ages 4 to 7. L2: ages 8 to 12. L3: 13 years and up.
- Read the guidesKindly read all the guides in our student area, and start on dojo etiquette soon after enrolment. A more detailed version of this guide, the Program Guide, has a lot of useful information about the program your child is enrolled in.
- Focus of each weekThe focus of each week is usually emailed to you every weekend. To make sure we are all on the same page, we need all students (parents of young children) to read our messages and write back if a response is called for.
- Arriving for classStudents should enter the training area a few minutes before their class starts, not wait outside or upstairs.
- Absence creditAsk for absence credit to bank the sessions you will miss, ahead of time. Credit is given for periods of 1 week or longer. No need to notify us every time you are going to miss a single class.
- Exam qualificationStudents have to earn at least one black stripe to get tested. Ideally, 2 black stripes should be earned before taking a shot at rank promotion. Tip-tests (mid-term exams) are held informally around week 5 or 6 of each term, when black stripes are given.
- Sparring gearFor sparring exercises (L2 and L3), sparring gear is needed: gloves and foot protectors. A pair of focus mitts is needed for L2 and L3 classes titled Sparring, Sparring Skills or Fitness Kickboxing.
- Terms and examsEach term is 3 months long. The last week of every term has no class while exam results and report cards are prepared. Exams are held at the end of each term, and for those who can't make it, there is a second round of exams about 1 month later.
- HolidaysWe are closed on statutory holidays. When a holiday lands on a day your child usually attends, any other class may be attended, but only in the same week as the holiday.
- UniformStudents are required to come to class in the approved uniform of the dojo.
- Check-in codeWhen you join the Powerhouse you get a profile in our member system (Gymdesk). Your child may need your help signing into the classes they attend with their unique check-in code.
- Medical conditionsIf your child has any serious medical condition, please let us know (ADHD? Hearing problems? Asthma?).
- Family classesFamily classes come around from time to time, where you learn how to train with your child at home.
- Photos and videosIf you don't want your child in any videos or pictures taken in class, which we may use in advertising for the dojo, let us know and we will not use any footage your child appears in.
- Stripes and Last Man StandingL1 and L2 students earn green and blue stripes for extraordinary performance in class, or may get a red card if they consistently break training rules or misbehave. Green = 1 point, blue = 2 points, red = minus 1 point. Points are counted at the end of every term, and the top 10 students enter the Last Man Standing Competition. The winner goes home with a prize!
- EmailWe rely heavily on email to communicate with students. If you can't check your email regularly, let us know so we can find another way to reach you.
- Who to contactFor program-related questions, write to powerhouseoffice@gmail.com. For admin-related questions, write to dojostudentservice@gmail.com. Please don't approach instructors unexpectedly with admin questions, as they are not trained to handle them. If you need to speak with someone, we are happy to arrange a call or a meeting.
- ValuablesPlease lock up belongings in the lockers downstairs, and avoid bringing anything valuable to class.
- SupervisionWe cannot provide supervision outside the training area (hallways, washrooms, upstairs or outside). Please tell your child to let us know and stay in the training area if you happen to be late.
- No running, no yahooingPlayful kids sometimes run up and down the stairs making noise in the building. It disturbs others and it is unsafe. Please help us enforce our "No Running and No Yahooing" rule. The dojo is expected to be quiet and peaceful.
- Parents of L1 studentsParents of L1 students in particular are expected to stay in the building, within reach, while their child is in class.
- WashroomsPlease remind your child to visit the washroom before jumping into class.
- ReferralsMost of our new students are referred by our members. You earn credit toward your tuition for every member you refer who signs up for regular training. If you would like to refer a friend, ask us for details.
Thank you for your attention, and for trusting us with teaching your child.
