Why parents choose us

Learn skills that carry over beyond martial arts.

At The Powerhouse, we take the modern approach with self-defence and fitness training that is consistently fun and exciting for children of all experience levels. The positive approach of our instructors motivates children in Central Vancouver to work hard and be the best version of themselves.

Our instructors are highly trained and certified to bring the best out of your child, and will keep them motivated to reach their goals. Classes teach karate through fun games and activities, so kids reap the benefits while having a blast.

The benefits are endless. Here are a few:

  • Motor skills and muscle memory
  • Confidence in themselves
  • Respect for others
  • Learning to say “No” to negative peer pressure
  • Teamwork
  • The power of goal setting
  • Bully prevention teachings

L1 · Ages 4 to 7

Our youngest group.

For students aged 4 to 7, we have developed a number of exercises and games over the years that are specifically designed to deliver valuable skills and be fun at the same time. The focus is general fitness and athleticism, and very basic karate techniques.

L1 students follow a junior grading syllabus, a lighter version of the full one: the road to yellow belt is broken into small steps with stripes on a white belt, so young kids see progress often. Junior black belt is equal to 9th kyu in the universal kyu system.

L2 · Ages 8 to 12

Classical karate, real goals.

Each student builds strong character and learns classical karate and self-defence in a positive and safe environment. Students work through the kyu ranks from white belt toward black belt, with a belt exam at the end of every 3-month term.

Green and blue stripes reward extraordinary effort in class. At the end of every term, the top 10 point earners enter our Last Man Standing Competition, and the winner goes home with a prize.

How parents can help

  1. Two sessions a weekAttended consistently.
  2. Make a big deal of examsAnd of every rank your child earns.
  3. Get involved yourselfKids are far more motivated when they see you in a uniform too, even if you train less often. Families who kick together, stick together.
★★★★★

My son has been training at Powerhouse for over six years, starting at the age of four, and the progress he's made has been outstanding. Under the expert guidance of Sensei Ramin, he has developed strong martial arts techniques, discipline, and self-confidence.

★★★★★

As a mother, I highly recommend Powerhouse for all kids. Even though my son is attending for less than a year, I already noticed significant improvement, especially within his confidence. The instructors are making such a friendly, professional atmosphere for the kids and families where everyone seems happy and comfortable.
